Articles: How to record Audio + Video in ScreenVirtuoso

Note: ScreenVirtuoso records sound from the audio card. It does not use a network connection as streaming video recorders do. For example, if you want to capture sound coming from other applications (browser, media player, etc.) your sound card must allow you to capture what you hear (it has the Wave Out Mix, Stereo/Mono Mix or What U Hear audio device/audio input).

Read your sound card documentation to make sure it allows you to capture what you hear. If your sound card/audio driver has no such ability ScreenVirtuoso can not record sound coming from other applications.
However, in any case you can record sound from the Microphone.

This is not a ScreenVirtuoso's error.
Windows does not allow you to record sound from OUTPUT audio devices.
You can record only from INPUT audio devices.
For this reason you can not record sound from speakers (OUTPUT audio device).
If your sound card has a mixer, it can re-direct sound from the OUTPUT audio device (speakers) to the INPUT audio device: Wave Out Mix/Stereo Mix/What U Hear.

See our advices below for possible solutions.

First of all make sure the Record Sound option on Video page is checked.

If the Record Sound check box is disabled, it means your system has no sound card or it is not configured properly.

When ScreenVirtuoso starts it checks all available audio recording devices and disables the Record Sound checkbox if it cannot detect them.

For example, see the first picture (Windows Vista: Control Panel->Sound):

All Devices Disabled
Microphone Enabled

It shows that all audio devices for recording are disabled (Record Sound check box is also disabled).

You need to enable at list one recording device to enable the Record Sound check box (second picture).

All available audio devices are displayed on ScreenVirtuoso's Audio page.

Once the Record Sound check box is checked go to the Audio page and select a valid audio device/audio input:

Windows XP

Record sound on Windows XP

Windows Vista

Record Sound on Windows Vista

For example, to record sound from the Microphone set:

Device: Your Sound Card
Input: Microphone

on Windows XP, or

Device: Microphone
Input: Master Volume

on Windows Vista.
To record sound coming from other applications (browser, media player, etc.) set:

Device: Your Sound Card
Input: Mixer or What U Hear

on Windows XP, or

Device: Mixer or What U Hear
Input: Master Volume

on Windows Vista.

Note: If you do not see the Mixer or What U Hear audio devices/inputs, your sound card does not allow you to record sound coming from other applications (for example, browser or media player), i.e. what you hear (see above).

You can record only from available devices/inputs (for example, from the Microphone)

Possible Solutions:
  1. Upgrade your sound card.
  2. Use an additional software called Virtual Audio Cable to record sound coming from other applications. For example, Virtual Audio Cable. Note: VAC is a helper software - driver. You still need our ScreenVirtuoso to record video/sound.
  3. Insert a jumper wire in the Line Out (or Headphones Out) and Mic In jacks on your computer's sound card:
Connect Audio Output To Audio Input
    Audio Cable
In this case you can record What You Hear from the Microphone audio device.

If you do, you may wish to adjust the microphone gain or the audio may be slightly overamped and sound distorted.
