Converting a sequence of images into an AVI video file

This tutorial explains how to convert a series of image files into a digital video file of the .AVI type.

  1. Run VirtualDub.
  2. Click the File | Open video file menu command.
  3. In the Open video file dialog, select the first image file of your sequence. We suppose that images are numbered starting from 1, preceded by a number of zeroes (see a picture).
  4. The sequence will now be loaded into VirtualDub, which displays it on two screens. The screen on the left shows how your input file looks like. The one on the right shows what you output file will look like.
  5. Using the controls at the bottom, you can play, rewind and move back and forth along the sequence. If you find that it plays too fast, don't worry: we address precisely this issue a couple of steps later.
  6. Now we create video without sound. You can add sound later if you want. To turn off the audio track, select the No audio item of the Audio menu.
  7. To adjust the frame rate (frames per second), select the Frame Rate menu item of the Video menu.
  8. Experiment introducing a different frame rates using the Change to edit control and watch your loops play at different speeds.
  9. Click the Video | Compression to select a video compressor.
  10. Click the File | Save as AVI menu command to save your video.
That's all!
